Dress Code

Saudi dress expectations have relaxed significantly, but modesty is still appreciated:

  • Women: Abaya no longer required. Modest dress (shoulders/knees covered) expected
  • Men: Long pants preferred, shorts increasingly accepted in casual settings
  • Malls/restaurants: Smart casual works everywhere
  • Religious sites: Conservative dress required

Prayer Times

Businesses close during the five daily prayers:

  • Closures last 15-30 minutes each
  • Malls and restaurants close briefly
  • Plan around prayer times (check apps for daily schedule)
  • Cafés and restaurants in tourist areas may stay open

No Alcohol

Alcohol is prohibited in Saudi Arabia:

  • No bars, clubs with alcohol, or liquor stores
  • Non-alcoholic beer and mocktails widely available
  • Café culture is the social alternative
  • Shisha (hookah) available at many venues

Getting Around

  • Riyadh Metro: Opened 2023, 6 lines, expanding
  • Careem/Uber: Main transport option, works well
  • Taxis: Available but apps preferred
  • Driving: International visitors can rent cars

October-March: Best weather, Riyadh Season
April-September: Very hot (40°C+), indoor activities
Ramadan: Restaurants closed during day, festive nights

Cultural Tips

  • Greet with "As-salamu alaykum" (peace be upon you)
